Sibutramine or SB is a monoamine reuptake inhibitor (MRI) that has the ability to suppress appetite, helping you lose weight along with diet and exercise. This drug was first released by the European company Boots in the late eighties, then manufactured and marketed by Abbott Laboratories. However, since 2010, this drug is no longer available in many countries, it can only be found in some.

More popularly known as Meridia, this drug was developed to treat obesity due to its effect on appetite. Sibutramine can suppress appetite by decreasing the reuptake of serotonin and norepinephrine in synaptic clefts. These substances can affect your feeling of fullness, as when the concentration increases, your appetite is suppressed.

This drug can be a great medicine to add to your drying cycle, especially if you are on a strict diet. Once athletes and bodybuilders start drying cycles, it is a little difficult for them to suppress appetite and food cravings. With SB in their hands, it is much easier to keep calorie intake in the range of what is needed for weight loss.

As mentioned earlier, sibutramine is a great drug to help you lose weight and achieve your goals. However, this drug was discontinued in many countries because it was seen to increase the incidence of cardiovascular events and strokes. We will discuss this later in the Side Effects section.

Action

Sibutramine is structurally similar to the class of amphetamines, although it does not possess their biological properties. Like the centrally acting drug, Sibutramine is an inhibitor of the reuptake of serotonin (53%), norepinephrine (54%) and dopamine (16%), as a result of which it increases the level of these mediators in the intersynaptic space. Thus, by increasing the concentration of serotonin in the center of hunger and satiety, the drug suppresses appetite.

The main effects

• inhibition of presynaptic reuptake of monoaminergic neurotransmitters in the central nervous system and suppression of appetite;
• activation of anorexigenic secretion and a decrease in the secretion of orexigenic neuropeptides;
• increased energy expenditure and activation of sympathetic influences of the peripheral nervous system.
• Sibutramine can induce mood changes (improvement) because overlapping areas of the brain (eg, the serotonergic system) are often used to control energy homeostasis and mood. Sibutramine was approved by the FDA in 1997 as a weight loss drug only.

Usage

The average dose of Sibutramine is 10 mg once a day in the morning, if this is not enough after a few days of use, the dose can be increased to 15 mg per day. As a rule, after 6 months after starting treatment and before stopping the drug intake, appetite normalizes, and body weight settles to a plateau. Do not exceed the dose, as this is often associated with side effects and complications. Reception is carried out in combination with a low-calorie diet and exercise. After discontinuation of the drug, weight loss is often observed. Sibutramine is effective in reducing body weight and food intake when treated for a short period of time (6–12 months), its effectiveness decreases with prolonged use of the drug (> 1 year).

Side effects

Sibutramine is an excellent weight loss drug, however this drug has a number of serious side effects that should be noted and taken into account. Common side effects:

• Dry mouth
• Nausea, upset stomach
• Insomnia
• Constipation
• Headache, flushing and joint pain.

Side effects from the cardiovascular system are relatively common (about 10%): an increase in blood pressure by 2–20 mm Hg, an increase in heart rate by 3–20 beats / min. In 2010, the FDA raised concerns about the high risk of heart disease and stroke when taking sibutramine in people with cardiovascular disease. There are also side effects associated with its noradrenergic stimulation of the hypothalamus of appetite regulation mechanisms and sympathomimetic properties: dry mouth, nausea, taste changes, indigestion, constipation, insomnia, anxiety, algomenorrhea, muscle and joint pain, difficulty urinating, impaired urination ...

At a young age, in the absence of heart and vascular disease, Sibutramine is considered a safe drug. If side effects occur after withdrawal, all symptoms disappear without harm to health. Serious complications are rare.

Scientists believe that a person is at a greater risk of obesity than when taking Sibutramine.

As a drug

The high level of drug control fosters false rumors that sibutramine is a drug. This drug is not addictive, since it does not increase the release of dopamine from synapses, and a high level of control is associated with the unauthorized use of Sibutramine as a means for weight loss, which can only speak of high efficiency.
